What Do You Do When You Can’t Stop Crying Over Somebody?

We had mental health and relationship expert Dr. Jeff Gardere stop by the program to talk to us about what to do if you’re obsessing over an ex. His new program is called Exaholics (www.exaholics.com), and it’s an online community designed to help people get through their breakups.

“It’s Your Party, You Can Cry If You Want To”

In our chat together, Dr. Jeff responds to a broken person “who has not stopped crying for two weeks”. This is actually a natural and welcomed feeling after a relationship ends. “You’re going through a bereavement, you’re experiencing grief,” says Gardere. A certain hope has indeed died, and it’s more than worthwhile to mourn for a period of time.

Two weeks of crying, however, might indicate dipping into a “state of depression”. If you’re unable to pull yourself out a particularly bad spot, you should try to seek help, whether it is from friends, family, or maybe an empathetic community like Exaholics. If you do find feel like inflicting pain on yourself, however, the priorities change – you should immediately seek out emergency medical help, or contact a mental health professional.
